Game: The Backrooms

Description: For this project, I wanted to create a game inspired by the popular video game "Backrooms: Realm of Shadows," a horror experience set within a seemingly endless maze of interconnected rooms and hallways. In the game, the player controls a person trapped in the Backrooms, whose objective is to find an exit before the maze drives them insane. The Backrooms are a surreal and unsettling environment, filled with strange sounds, flickering lights, and mysterious creatures.

For my web-based adventure game, I developed a much smaller concept of the Backrooms. Players can navigate the maze by clicking on arrow keys displayed on the screen, allowing them to move forward, backward, left, or right. I linked the arrow keys to different pages of the website in order to allow players to move to different rooms. I used images from Google to construct a maze that players can explore, with the ultimate goal of finding an exit. At the bottom of each image, I included riddles and rhymes to guide players to the next room. While most of the rhymes are fun and games, some contain clues that will assist the player in finding a way out. There's only one way to escape the maze, but I've added an Easter egg where if a player finds the hidden egg, it will instantly transport them to the winning room.

I selected the mobs based on YouTube videos that seemed exciting to include, which I thought would enhance the overall experience of the game. If a player encounters a mob, they are "captured" and can watch a YouTube video demonstrating the event by clicking on the character. For the GIFs, I chose to do them at random locations and came up with the ideas as I was creating this project. Despite this being only my third time creating GIFs, I'm pleased with the results and learned a lot while making the final one for this project.
